  • 4 cups Bottle gourd - sliced,
  • 2 tsp Red chilly powder
  • Turmeric powder - a pinch
  • 1/2 tsp Tamarind paste
  • Salt - as needed
  • ---Ingredients for Gravy
  • 3 tsp Sesame seeds
  • 1/2 cup Grated coconut
  • 1 tsp Roasted Bengal gram powder
  • 7 Red chillies
  • ---Ingredients for Seasoning
  • 2 tsp Vegetable oil
  • Asafetida powder - a pinch
  • 2 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1 or 2 Red Chillies
  • Curry leaves


  1. Take a bowl, put the sliced bottle gourd cubes with water and then add salt. Cook it until tender.
  2. In a separate Kadai, roast the sesame seeds, red chillies, and grated coconut till it gets browned and keep aside.
  3. Roast the Bengal gram in a separate kadai and grind it into a powder.
  4. In another bowl, heat oil. Add gravy paste and Bengal gram powder and then add a pinch of turmeric powder, red chilly powder and mix all these with water.
  5. Then add the bottle gourd pieces, tamarind paste and cook on medium heat.
  6. After the bottle gourd gets cooked well and raw flavor of Bengal gram powder is gone, simmer your stove until the gravy gets thickened.
  7. For seasoning, heat oil in a small pan, add asafetida and mustard seeds. When the seeds start to pop, add a couple of whole red chillies and fry until lightly browned.
  8. Then add the curry leaves and fry for a second and pour this over the bottle gourd gravy curry.
  9. Now the tasty bottle gourd gravy curry is ready.
